Department of Mathematics organised a guest lecture on the topic ‘Learning How to Learn’ for undergraduate BBA and BSc Mathematics students on 4/10/2019 at Lecture Hall 1, KCLAS. The resource person was Er.Jayashree MM, Software Engineer, CTS, Coimbatore.
Difficulties the present generation face in learning viz., lack of concentration, diversion due to present gadgets and video games were discussed. According to the speaker one should fix the mind to study first then play games or play games and then study, based on individuals mind set. She also explained about the Pomodoro technique of learning to perform well in the exam. The Pomodoro Technique is a time management system that encourages people to work with the time they have—rather than against it. Using this method, you break your workday into 25-minute chunks separated by five-minute breaks.
These intervals are referred to as ‘Pomodoro Technique’. She introduced tips to beat procrastination, which is the avoidance of doing a task that needs to be accomplished by a certain deadline. It could be further stated as a habitual or intentional delay of starting or finishing a task despite knowing it might have negative consequences. Students were advised to adopt Anti-Procrastination Strategies viz., forgive yourself for procrastinating in the past, commit to the task, promise yourself a reward and minimize distractions. Few students felt that they experienced some of the symptoms told by the resource person and now they are comfortable as they got a remedy for the same. The lecture was highly impactful since the students are in the end phase of first semester and so they should concentrate on their studies to have a good future.
