Department of Political Science organized an expert conversation on 17-02-2022 through MS Teams coordinated by Dr. Prashant Kumar Choudhary. This session by Mr. Azhar Khan C.A., Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law, PES University, Bangalore., aimed at throwing insights into the Political Representation of Religious Minorities in Karnataka
The noteworthy program began with Mr. Azhar Khan’s arguments on the way multiculturalism and multi-ethnicity contribute in democratically governed countries. He pointed out the laws and acts that are mentioned in the Indian Constitution regarding fundamental rights and the right to equality. He emphasized the rights that contribute to equal representations of religious minorities. He then spoke about the political representation of religious minorities in the Lok Sabha, Karnataka Legislative Assembly, and their political representation in the Karnataka Council of Ministers and Karnataka local and urban bodies. He put forth his arguments with exceptional statistical data to establish that underrepresentation and a low level of political awareness stand as barriers to the development of minority groups.
He then moved on to speak about inhibiting social and cultural factors that affect religious minorities. He brought out his observations of the lack of organizational movements and pressure groups in reviving and supporting the minority groups. He strongly felt that the spread of different ideas like progressive, liberals, moderates, conservatives, ultra-fundamentalists affect the development of minorities. Finally, he ended his lecture by summarizing the important points such as low level of political awareness, underrepresentation, fair representation of all people while highlighting the ideas that could help the minority groups to get equal representation in society, politics, and in all wakes of life.
The expert conversation had an interaction session in which the participants raised questions for clarification with the resource person. Dr. Anagha Babu, Faculty of Political Science proposed a vote of thanks after which the session concluded.
