The Department of Social Work, Kumaraguru College of Liberal Arts and Science in collaboration with Native Medicare Charitable Trust (NMCT) organized a Workshop on Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) for the MSW Students and NSS Volunteers on 11th February 2020. Mr. E. Prabusankar, CSR Officer, NMCT, Coimbatore was the resource person for this workshop. Dr. Emmanuel Daniel, Faculty of Social Work, was the coordinator for this workshop. A total of 28 students from MSW and NSS participated in this workshop.
The workshop started with a formal inauguration in which Ms. Sowmya V.G, from MSW, welcomed the gathering. Dr. Emmanuel Daniel gave an overview of the workshop and shared on the importance of PRA, which was followed by introduction of the resource person by Ms. Raghavi. V, from MSW. The Resource person started the session by addressing the student’s reason behind the importance of understanding the community and how PRA techniques helps in problem solving. He illustrated the difference between Equality and Equity. This was an activity to understand about the inclusion and exclusion of individuals the society. The session continued with the resource person sharing a lot of facts and insights of approaches in Social Work, Capital Analysis, Social Activists like Medha Padker, Aruna Roy, Arunthathi Roy – their key contributions. During post lunch session at 1:30 pm the students were taken to Anjugam Nagar to experience the practical method of a PRA Technique – Social Mapping. The students were divided into 5 teams and each team were sent to explore and understand Anjugam nagar for a span of 45 minutes. The session concluded with and vote of thanks by Ms. Sri Kowsalya, from MSW. Followed by a group photo.
