Department of Commerce organized workshop on Organic Agriculture in association with Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore on 8th August 2019 at TNAU.
The workshop began with an introduction session by Dr. E. Somasundaram, Professor and Head, Department of Sustainable Organic Agriculture. He explained the importance of agriculture and the stages of “Green Revolution”. Dr. E. Somasundaram also shared various information on assessing quality of food and explained students’ various techniques used to identify the toxic level in packed food. He also advised to check “satavic.org”, for additional reference.
This session was followed by Dr. T. Manoharan, Professor and Head, Department of Agrl. Entomology, TNAU who explained on the various pest management techniques in organic farming. He also showed various traps created by TNAU that are effectively used by farmers in pest control.
In the post lunch session students were explained about the “Panchagavya” and preparation of Panchagavya and its beneficial effect. This session also helped students to understand about Vermicompost and they were also taken to vermicompost shed that helped them understand the process and usage of different variety of earthworms. African variety is used widely for better results.The workshop concluded with certificate distribution by the coordinator Dr. R. Jansirani, Professor (Extension), Dept. of Sustainable Organic Agriculture, TNAU. Students well received the session, and they found it very interesting and productive.
