Department of Political Science conducted a guest talk on the topic “Regional Economy”. Dr.R.Manikandan, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, was the resource person. The welcome address was given by Miss. Ilakkiya, I BA-Political Science.
He started the session with some questions related to the economy. He introduced different types of economies in the world and explained why India remains a developing economy. The unemployment rate in India was discussed along with the occupational classification of workers. Then he discussed the sector-wise contribution of GDP in India.
After the introduction, he put forward some more information on the regional economy. He explained about the GDP contribution of Tamil Nadu and the performance of primary, secondary and tertiary sectors in the state. The advantages of each sectors were discussed thoroughly in the presentation. Then he initiated a discussion on the challenges faced by these sectors and the possible solutions to the problems.
The third phase of his presentation was based on the economy of Coimbatore. The agriculture, industry and service sectors in this region were covered in the discussion. The session was followed by an interaction. Finally, the special guest was presented with a token of appreciation by our department HOD, Mr.Shanmugam. The session ended with a vote of thanks by Mr.Chandramouli (I BA-Political Science).
