Department of Political Science conducted a Guest Lecture on “Cyber Security and Growing Challenges”. Mr. Akhil Benny, Director-in-Charge & Head of the Department of Forensic Science, Sree Narayana Guru Institute of Science and Management, was the resource person. Ms. Dhanashree (I BA Political Science) has given the introduction to the guest talk. Mr.Shanmugam P introduced the resource person and welcomed him.
He started with the need for cyber education for political scientists and explained it with the present Indian scenario. He continued to talk about the most common cyber-crimes in the world like Call Centre/BPO Scams, Child Pornography, Credit Card Frauds, Cyber Stalking, Phreaking, Email Security destruction, Violation of privacy, Piracy, Data fiddling and Hacking. He explained the possible solutions for these crimes.
The second part of the session focused on the scientific reasoning of information available in the internet space. He mentioned the topics like testability and falsifiability, theory vs hypothesis, evaluating a conspiracy theory, etc.
He concluded the session with some messages for students on Individual safety and security in cyberspace. Some of the tips like keeping personal and professional information separate and restricting access to it, practicing safe browsing, keeping privacy settings on etc.
The session ended with a vote of thanks by Mr. Kabilan M (I BA Political Science).
