Department of Political Science conducted a Guest Lecture on “Applying a Human Rights-Based Approach to Development”. Ms. Ardra Manasi,Development Practitioner and former Policy Consultant with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) (UN DESA), New York City, was the resource person. Mr.Shanmugam P introduced the resource person and welcomed her.
She started with a question on “What is Human Rights?” and explained it with the present Indian scenario. She continued to talk about the evolution of human rights and the United Nations with an emphasis on the fundamental rights enshrined in the Indian constitution. She mentioned about the interrelationship between development and human rights.
The second part of the session focused on the UN’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which aim to achieve “human rights for all”. It was an interactive session with a lot of opportunities for questions and answers.
She concluded the session with some messages for students on the best learning practices and also various opportunities in the United Nations Organization. Apart from that, she discussed the wide scope of political science in research, academics and other jobs.
