I’m Aseera Fathima, a first-year student of psychology, I embarked on a journey uncovering the beauty of Lippan Art Workshop conducted during one of the Ignite sessions in campus. Initially I was skeptical about the earthy materials, soon I found myself captivated by the therapeutic process of shaping the clay. Under the expert guidance of my teacher, I began to delve into the world of patterns, learning to interpret the symbolism embedded in each motif. The workshop ignited a spark of creativity within me, as I realized that Lippan Art is more than just a craft; it’s a captivating story etched into the heart of Gujarat’s Kutch region. This ancient Art form, where mud and mirrors intertwine to create mesmerizing patterns, is a legacy of the Rabari community. Once adorning the humble mud huts, Lippan Art has evolved into a global sensation, its intricate designs a testament to the region’s rich cultural heritage and the potential of this ancient art form in modern spaces.
Adding to my thoughts a fellow member of my brigade Nayanithaa J. B. from first year Bachelors of Business Administration, shares her experience of this workshop stating her initial curiosity and later how the hands-on experience became a fun filled learning of visual delight. Working with clay and mirrors felt like unleashing her inner child. She loved experimenting with different designs and seeing how the mirrors brought her creations to life. It was an incredible learning experience from the regular classes. By the end of the workshop, we crafted intricate patterns into damp mud, followed by the delicate placement of mirrors, transforming ordinary walls into shimmering masterpieces. This labour-intensive Art form is a symphony of patience, precision, and creativity. At the heart of Lippan Art lies a meticulous process of creating a connection to the past, a celebration to the present and a promise for the future.
